Pilots and Vessel Operators
In addition to the other duties performed by Troopers, Wildlife Pilots and Vessel Operators performs these duties.
Department Pilot Assignments
A Trooper may provide additional services when assigned pilot duties. These duties include:
- law enforcement patrols for commercial and sport fishing and hunting activities
- transporting Alaska Bureau of Wildlife Enforcement Personnel and equipment to posts and patrol areas, to patrol vessels and remote stake-out locations
- providing assistance to the Division of Alaska State Troopers when required in criminal investigations, transports, arrests, and search and rescue operations
- Pilots will perform preventative and routine maintenance on aircraft as directed by the Aircraft Section and maintain aircraft stalls, hangars, or moorings in a professional and functional manner
- Pilots will attend assigned training and maintain currency in flight standards and flight physicals as required by the Aircraft Section Manual
- Troopers provide written logs and reports regarding all flight activities.
Vessel Operators and Marine Section Assignments
A Trooper may provide services associated with being assigned to a department patrol vessel. Duties include
- planning and conducting law enforcement patrols for commercial and sport fishing and hunting
- Patrols on the larger vessels may be up to six weeks in duration
- wheel watches while underway and at anchor
- navigation and course plotting
- making VHF and SSB radio communications
- conducting patrols with small boats away from the main vessel and search and rescue operations
