Patrol Vessel Stimson
At 156 Feet in length and 443 tons, the Stimson is the largest Patrol Vessel
(P/V) in the State of Alaska's inventory. The Stimson's Home Port of Dutch
Harbor, Alaska which is part of the City of Unalaska, is located on Amaknak
Island in the Aleutian Chain, 800 air miles from Anchorage and 1,700 miles
northwest of Seattle. Dutch Harbor is ranked as the number one port in the
nation for seafood volume and value.
The vessel is named in honor of First Sergeant John D. Stimson. John Stimson
was active in the marine enforcement efforts of the division, but tragically
perished January 14th, 1983, while responding to a mayday call.
The P/V Stimson's primary function is the enforcement of commercial fisheries
in the Bering Sea and Bristol Bay. Its size and stability allow it to respond
year round to Search and Rescue missions, it is equipped for fire fighting and
can provide a platform for environmental pollution responses. The vessel can
also provide emergency generation and communications in remote locations.
