Safe Assisted Living Homes

The Division of Fire and Life Safety offers the following ideas to assist you in selecting a safe assisted living home for your loved ones:

Assisted Living Home License:

• All assisted living homes in Alaska are required to be licensed
• Administrator of home must be certified
• The license is issued by Alaska Department of Health and Social Services

Appearance:

• Location accessible, convenient and well groomed
• Structure sound and in good repair
• Interior rooms handicap accessible

Safety Equipment:

• Operating smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
• Certified fire extinguishers
• Posted fire escape plan in all rooms

Staff:

• Clean and courteous
• Trained to handle emergencies
• Background check
