HOW DO I REQUEST PUBLIC RECORDS?

Alaska state law requires state and local agencies to make public records available to the public. This law, the Freedom of Information Act, AS 40.21.010, gives the public the right to inspect the state’s public records.

Your public information request must include a reasonable description that would allow the assigned employee to locate the records. A general question is not a public disclosure request.

Here’s how to request public information from DPS:

Step 1: Get the Request for Public Information form
Click this link Request For Public Information

Step 2: Complete the form
After filling out the form (electronically or by hand):
  • Return it by submitting the electronic form.
  • Return it by emailing dps.publicinforequest@alaska.gov
  • Return it by mail to:
    Public Records Administrator
    Alaska Department of Public Safety
    450 Whittier Street
    PO Box 111200
    Juneau, AK 99811-1200

Note: The recommended software to fill this form out is Adobe Reader. If installed on your computer, Internet Explorer and Safari will open the form correctly. If using Firefox please select "Open with Different Viewer" when prompted and select Adobe Reader. If using Google Chrome please right click on the form link and select "Save link as", then fill out the form on your computer.

Step 3: Costs for Public Records

Should your public information request incur a charge, you will be contacted prior to the request being processed.
