A Detachment ----------------------------------- Location: Petersburg Case Number: AK13003415 Type: Death Investigation - Natural Text: On 01/15/13 at 1107 hours Alaska State Troopers received a report from Temsco Helicopters that 69 yoa David Hurrelbrink did not arrive on the beach at the scheduled pick up time from his remote cabin. Temsco returned to Petersburg and returned to the pick up location with EMT's to find Hurrelbrink a short distance from the beach in the forest. Hurrelbrink was lying on the trail and had no pulse. Attempts to revive Hurrelbrink were unsuccessful and he was pronounced deceased. No foul play is suspected and next of kin has been notified. Author: Trp. Investigation revealed Cody Cooper, age 18 of Wasilla, was driving a 1994 black Saturn sedan eastbound on Palmer Wasilla Highway when he turned left in front of Alexandria Schmidt, age 19 of Wasilla, who was driving a black 2010 Chevy Cobalt. The airbags in both vehicles were deployed and both drivers were wearing their seatbelts. Both drivers were transported by Mat-Su EMS to Mat-Su Regional Hospital with minor injuries. Cooper was issued a citation for failure to exercise due care to avoid a collision. Text: On 1-13-2013 at 1104 hours, AST contacted Lori A. Clum 45 YOA at her residence in Tatitlek after the Village Public Safety Officer received several complaints that Clum was selling alcohol in the village. Upon executing a search warrant on Clum's residence, AST seized several bottles of alcohol and other items of evidence. Clum was subsequently placed under arrest for three counts of sale of alcohol without a license in a local option community, five counts of misconduct involving weapons, Importation of alcohol into a local option village, and misconduct involving a controlled substance in the sixth degree. Clum was transported to the Valdez jail pending arraignment. During the contact it was discovered that a passenger, Shanika Dunn age 22 of Tazlina, was in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The driver was cited for the equipment violation and released. The drugs and paraphernalia were seized and Dunn was issued a summons for MICS 6. Upon arrival at the residence Troopers contacted Brandon T. Hale, age 19 of Wasilla. Investigation revealed Hale had had an active misdemeanor warrant for his arrest with the original DWLR. Hale was arrested for the warrant and remanded to the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility and held on $500. 00 bail. While enroute to the home, the VPSO observed Merlin operating a brown & tan truck traveling west on Togiak Heights Road. The VPSO activated his lights and conducted a traffic stop on Merlin to investigate the disturbance call. Upon contact with Merlin, the VPSO noted a strong alcoholic odor on his breath & person and Marlins' speech was heavily slurred and had blood shot & watery eyes. Merlin admitted to consuming some shots of Vodka before driving. Merlin refused to perform SFST's and refused to submit to a PBT. Merlin was arrested for DUI. Akelkok, age 39, had strangled her and struck her in the face. Investigation revealed that intoxicated Akelkok had consumed alcoholic beverages and then struck her with his hand, strangled her several times, damaged a door and then made several death threats to her. Akelkok was arrested and later remanded at the Dillingham Correctional facility pending his arraignment. Akelkok is currently on Felony Probation for a prior Felony Assault conviction. The snow machiner was identified as Douglas E. Gamechuk 43, of Togiak. The VPSO's in both Manokotak and Togiak determined Gamechuk was not in either village according to family and friends. At approximately 1900 hours, searchers from Togiak were sent out on the trail to meet searchers traveling from Manokotak. Gamechuk's snowmachine was located out of gas roughly 35 miles west of Manokotak on the trail. Searchers continued to look for Gamechuk. At approximately 0530 hours, Gamechuk was found deceased near the trail 4-5 miles from his snow machine. The State Medical Examiners office was contacted and an autopsy was requested. Next of kin have been notified. AST would like to thank the search and rescue teams in Togiak and Manokotak for their efforts. She then threw knives at her 16 year old boyfriend and 31 year old room mate and ultimately cut her roommates arm open in the struggle over another knife. When her 16 year old boyfriend called 911 she took the phone away and terminated the call. She was arrested by Troopers and remanded to the Fairbanks Youth Facility without incident. Investigation revealed April Williams, 69, of Soldotna was driving a 2002 GMC Yukon south when she lost control of the vehicle. She crossed the northbound lane of travel. At that time, she crashed through the guard rail. The vehicle stopped in the Anchor River. The collision was witnessed by an Alaska Wildlife Trooper who stopped and was able to get Williams out of the vehicle. Williams reported wearing her seat belt and was uninjured. She was issued citation for Basic Speed. Thomas J. Clegg, age 33 of Anchor Point, was identified as the driver of one of the vehicles. His 2 month old child was a passenger in the vehicle. Investigation determined Clegg, whose license was revoked for a previous DUI conviction and who was required to have an IID installed in his vehicle, had consumed alcohol prior to driving. He performed and failed SFSTs, after which he was placed under arrest for Felony DUI, DWRL, Driving in Violation of a Limited License and Child Endangerment I. Brandy A. Taylor, age 21 of Anchor Point, was identified as the driver of the second vehicle. Investigation determined Taylor's license was also revoked for a previous DUI conviction and she was required to have an IID installed in her vehicle. Taylor was issued misdemeanor citations for DWRL and Driving in Violation of a Limited License and released at the scene. Clegg was remanded to the Homer Jail without further incident. Investigation revealed Tavares had made several claims of Alaskan residency on numerous hunting and fishing licenses and permits, in addition to harvesting personal use caught salmon. Tavares had been receiving a resident tax exemption on his principal residence in Captain Cook, HI since 1996 in addition to owning and operating a full time business in Hawaii. Investigation resulted in the following 16 charges. Knowingly making a false statement on a sport fishing license in 2008,2009,2010,2011,2012. Knowingly making a false statement on a 2010 hunting license. Making a false statement on 2009-2010 black bear tag. Making a false statement on a 2010, 2011, and 2012 personal use permit. Failure to submit a 2009-2010 black bear hunt report. Personal use fishing without a valid sport fishing license and prohibited conduct in 2010 and 2011 after he reported harvesting a total of 38 salmon between the 2 years. Failure to return a 2012 personal use permit to fish and game. Tavares was issued a misdemeanor summons to appear in Kenai court on 02/01/13.
