AK Div of Fire and Life Safety ------------------------------------------------- Location: Anchorage Case number: NA Type: Press Release Text: Governor Sean Parnell Proclaims May 2013 as "Building Safety Month" Governor Sean Parnell signed an executive proclamation on April 14, 2013 establishing May 2013 as "Building Safety Month" in Alaska. Governor Parnell and Alaska State Fire Marshal Kelly Nicolello want Alaskans to be reassured that the buildings they live, work, learn, worship and play in are safe. This year's theme for Building Safety Month is "Code Officials Keep You Safe". Each week of Building Safety Month spotlights a specific area of building safety: Fire Safety and Awareness, May 6-12; Disaster Safety and Mitigation, May 13-19; Backyard and Pool Safety, May 20-26; and Energy and Green Building, May 27-31. "When our building safety and fire prevention experts inspect buildings during and after construction, they help to ensure Alaskans will be safe in and around these structures," said Fire Marshal Nicolello. "Ensuring public safety is something we think about and do every day working with homebuilders, plumbers, roofers and other construction industry trades and contractors." Building codes address all aspects of construction, from structural to fire prevention, plumbing and mechanical systems, and energy efficiency. To ensure buildings are safe requires the active participation of code officials, fire inspectors, architects, builders, engineers, contractors and others in the construction industry, as well as property owners. "Public safety is our number one concern," said Nicolello. "During Building Safety Month and all year long, building safety and fire prevention officials are here to help protect you, your family and our state." Fire Marshal Nicolello adds, "Fire safe behavior can keep a fire from starting. Working smoke alarms, planning and practicing your fire escape plan and adding residential fire suppression sprinklers can ensure your family's safety from a fire."
