Author: JCB2 Received Thursday, September 02, 2010 8:02 AM and posted Thursday, September 02, 2010 8:05 AM Location: Angoon Case number: to be assigned Type: Wasted Bear Text: On 8-25-2010, Alaska Wildlife Troopers from Sitka responded to the Village of Angoon for a report of a wasted bear at the city dump. Upon arrival, a sow bear was found at the dump that had been killed and mutilated. On 8-28-2010, Sitka Wildlife Troopers responded again to Angoon to investigate another bear that had been shot and killed at the city dump. There have been recent concerns in the community reference bears becoming aggressive and destroying property throughout the town. However in both cases, it appears these particular animals were not shot while actively destroying property or threatening life and furthermore there were no defense of life and property reports turned into ADF&G concerning the two bears, nor were their hides and skulls salvaged and turned over to ADF&G. In previous years, Angoon has applied for public safety permits to destroy problem bears. However, once the bears were killed, the conditions of the permits were not fulfilled which included turning over of the hide, claws and skull to ADF&G. Since these requirements have not been met in previous years, new permits were not issued to Angoon. Alaska State statute requires that if a bear is destroyed due to the protection of life or property, the skull, claws and hide are to be turned over to ADF&G along with a report of why the bear was destroyed. In both recent cases in Angoon, that requirement has not been met. Wildlife Troopers have established several suspects, but if anyone has any further information regarding the bear killings in Angoon, please contact Wildlife Safeguard at 1 800 478-3377. Callers can remain anonymous and rewards are available for information leading to the conviction of offenders.
