Investigation revealed Barbara E. Monteros, ag e of 41 of Arizona, was stopped in her 1995 Toyota Corolla on N Vroman Driv e near the Palmer Wasilla Highway. Monteros made a westbound turn onto the Palmer Wasilla Highway, cut off a vehicle, and was struck in the rear by a 1994 Ford Escort operated by Earl W. Almdale, age 66 of Palmer. Lewis Loop, Wasilla. Investigati on revealed, Kyle J. Cherry, age 72 of Wasilla, had assaulted a family memb er causing injury. The family member attempted to call 911 but Cherry prev ented her from doing so by breaking the telephone. Cherry was arrested for assault in the third degree and Interfering with a report of domestic viole nce and transported to Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility where he was held without bail. Three ground teams with a total of 13 searchers were dispatched to search the areas of Akutan Bay Valley & Hot Springs Bay. The United States Coast Guard and Peninsula Airways searched by air. Both men returned on their own, uninjured, to the Trident facility the morning of 9-20-12. Troopers responded to the village and identified the victims as Wesley Sampson Jr., of Noorvik and Scott Davis, of Noorvik. Bot h victims had non-life threatening injuries. Investigation also determined that Binford was in possession of firearms while highly intoxicated. Bin ford was contacted by troopers and taken into custody. Received Thursday, September 20, 2012 4:20 PM and posted Thursday, September 20, 2012 4:29 PM -------------------------------------------------------------------- Location: Kiana Case number: AK12236676 Type: Attempted murder / Robbery / Theft / Misconduct Involving Weapons Update: On 9/19/12 after Alaska State Troopers assisted in transporting the two gunshot victims to Kiana they were subsequently identified as: Paul James Buckel age 46 of Kotzebue, Alaska, who was later transported to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. Charles W. Buckel Jr. age 47 of Fostoria, Michigan, who was later transported to Providence Hospital in Anchorage. Both victims provided Alaska State Troopers with details of the incident at the hunting cabin on the Squirrel River, on the evening of 9/18/12. Teddy Kyle Smith, age 45 of Kiana, was identified as the suspect in the shooting of the Buckel brothers. With the aid of Alaska State Trooper and Alaska Wildlife Trooper aircraft, an inflatable boat matching the description of the one stolen from the victims, was spotted by air just before noon on 9/19/12 on the Squirrel River approximately 35 miles upriver from Kiana. \ Additional Alaska State Troopers, to include members of the Northern Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT), were flown into Kiana on 9/19/12 and plans were developed to safely intercept the suspect. On the morning of 9/20/12 approximately 12 State Troopers used aircraft and watercraft to stage about 16 miles up the Squirrel River from Kiana. At this location at approximately 1445 hours on 9/20/12, Teddy K. Smith was contacted in the stolen boat by Alaska State Troopers and he surrendered without injury or incident. As a result of this investigation, an arrest warrant has been obtained from the Kotzebue Court for Smith, charging him with two counts of attempted murder in the first degree, two counts of theft in the second degree, one count of robbery in the first degree and misconduct involving weapons in the third degree with bail on these offenses set at $500,000.00. Smith will be transported to Kotzebue Jail pending court arraignment tomorrow. Alaska State Troopers would like to recognize the significant community support from the residents of Kiana who contributed to bringing a safe conclusion to this serious event. Original Text: On 9/19/12 at 0336 hours Alaska State Troopers in Kotzebue were notified that two adult males who had been floating down the Squirrel River had stopped at a cabin, on the evening of 9/18/12, about 40 miles upriver from the community of Kiana. When the hunters stopped, they found another male already staying in the cabin, an altercation occurred and the two hunters were both shot. The unknown suspect then stole the victims' inflatable boat and hunting equipment and began floating down river. Alaska State Troopers responded this morning at daylight and transported both victims, who were suffering from gunshots, to Kiana where a waiting medevac flight took over care. One individual has transported to a hospital in Kotzebue. The other is being transported to a hospital in Anchorage. Information on the victims is not being released at this time. Troopers are currently at the cabin where the incident occurred and in the community of Kiana, awaiting further resources before beginning a search of the approximately 40 miles of terrain, in an attempt to locate and arrest the suspect. Investigation revealed that Thomas Bracken, age 26, of Wasilla had been driving his vehicle while impaired by alcohol when he had lost control and gone into the ditch. In addition, Bracken had two prior DUI convictions within the past 10 years. Prior to AST arrival on scene, Bracken had gone to a neighboring residence and had attempted to break in by throwing a large paving block through the window on the front door of the residence, causing approximately $1,000.00 damage. He had also entered the residence owner's vehicle. Further investigation revealed that Bracken was required to operate a motor vehicle with an Ignition Interlock Device, which was not installed on his vehicle. Bracken was arrested and transported to Mat-Su Pretrial where he was lodged on the charges of Felony DUI-Alcohol, Attempted Burglary I, Criminal Mischief III, Criminal Trespass II and Driving in Violation of Limitations Placed on his Drivers License.
