The VPSO responded to the house and found Alexie Gust Jr. 34, and Barbara Gust 30, passed out as a result of alcohol while a disabled 11 year old child was left in the residence unable to care for himself. The child was removed from the house and both Alexie and Barbara Gust were charged with Endangering the Welfare of a child in the second degree. AST responded to the area and located a 2002 Subaru owned by a Dillingham resident. Investigation determined the vehicle was driven by a 17 year old female and was traveling south on Aleknagik Lake road when the driver encountered a moose in the roadway around 0230 hours. The driver swerved to avoid the moose and lost control of the vehicle which rolled over upon entering the ditch. Four other passengers ranging in age from 15 to 18 years of age were not hurt. The driver showed to have a provisional driver's license and failed to report the accident as required. The accident is being investigated by AST and charges are pending. The blue 2002 Audi was contacted at a gas station on Geist Rd. and Fairbanks St. Investigation revealed that Robert Duncan, age 39 of Fairbanks, was driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Duncan was arrested and transported to Fairbanks Correctional Center without incident. Investigation revealed y/o 27 Katie Graff of Fairbanks had been driving her 2003 Hyundai Elantra on the roadway when a moose entered the roadway. Graff could not avoid the collision. Graff sustained minor injuries and was not transported. Graff reported she was wearing her seat belt. The moose was salvaged by a charity. It was determined that there were three individuals in the vehicle. As the trooper was gathering information from one individual, another male subject exited the vehicle and produced a handgun and fired multiple rounds at the trooper. The trooper was wounded by the gunfire but was still able to return fire. The subject then took the AST patrol vehicle and fled. The AST vehicle was found approximately one mile from the scene and the subject was found deceased inside the vehicle. The release of the man's name is pending next of kin notification. The Alaska State Trooper was transported to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries and released. The Alaska Bureau of Investigation has responded to the scene and the investigation is continuing. The name of the trooper involved in the shooting will be released after 72 hours. He is identified as Nicholas Leo Frazier, age 22 of Anchorage. Next of kin notification has been made and an autopsy by the Alaska State Medical Examiner's office is expected to be conducted on Monday. Interviews with the two occupunts of the vehicle, inspection of their van and the Alaska State Trooper patrol vehicle are still underway to attempt to determine the exact sequence of the events, how many shots were fired and to assist in determining the cause of death of Frazier. As protocol, the Trooper investigative report and findings will be then be referred to the Department of Law's Office of Special Prosecution and Appeals for review.
