A Detachment ------------------------------------------------- Location: Hollis Case number: AK12243514 Type: REDDI Report, DUI, Refusal Text: On 10/17/12 at approximately 1315 hours, Alaska State Troopers in Klawock responded to a REDDI (Report Every Dangerous Driver Immediately) report near mile 32 of the Klawock-Hollis Highway. Troopers contacted the driver of the REDDI vehicle at a nearby residence and identified her as Judith M. Sellards, age 40 of Hollis. Sellards was given a series of Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, and showed signs of impairment on all of the tests. Sellards was placed under arrest for Driving Under the Influence. Sellards was transported to the Craig jail facility, where she subsequently refused to provide a sample of her breath on the Datamaster. Sellards was remanded into the Craig Jail on charges of DUI and Refusal to Submit to a Breath Test. Bail was set at $500.00. Investigation revealed a passenger of the vehicle, Cole Ward, age 23 of Wasilla, had an outstanding arrest warrant for failure to appear on the original charge of NVOL. Ward was arrested, transported, and remanded to MSPT where he was held on $50 dollars bail. Upon contacting the individuals on the property, one fled. After a foot pursuit Troopers stopped and identified Craig Newbill, age 29 of Kodiak. Further investigation revealed Newbill had outstanding warrants for Failure to Report to Jail on original charges of Criminal Trespass I, two counts Misconduct of Controlled Substance 4, Theft 4, and Violating Conditions of Release. Troopers arrested Newbill for his outstanding warrants and remanded him to Kodiak Police Department Jail to serve his combined 120 days. Author: RAC2 Received Wednesday, October 17, 2012 9:17 AM and posted Wednesday, October 17, 2012 9:01 AM Location: Tikchik Lake Case Number: AK12241204 Type: Aircraft Accident (UPDATE) Text: On 10/17/12 at approximately 1820 hours, Dillingham AST was notified that after several days of waiting for the wind to subside, divers with Alaska Commercial Divers Inc. of Ketchikan were able to take advantage of a lull in the wind and successfully recover the remains of Newt Ball from the submerged aircraft. Due to temperatures in the area, aircraft will not be able to respond until the morning to retrieve the divers and remains. The body will be sent to the SME. Family and next of kin have been notified. Original text: On 10/07/12 at 1715 hours, the Alaska State Troopers in Dillingham received a report from a hunting guide at Tikchik Lake reporting an aircraft crash on the lake. The guide reported that he and a hunter observed a small aircraft attempting land on the lake when the aircraft flipped over and began to sink. No one was observed to exit the aircraft while it was sinking. The guide watched the area of the incident and has not observed anyone in the water since the crash. Alaska State Troopers have preliminary information regarding the identity of the aircraft and pilot, but will not release further information until a Trooper can arrive on scene and confirm the information. Alaska State Troopers were unable to fly to the lake to conduct an investigation on 10/7/12 due to darkness and fog in the area. Response efforts on 10/8/12, have also been hampered due to weather conditions in the area. The NTSB and FAA were notified. On 10/08/12 Troopers and searchers were unable to locate the aircraft due to murky water conditions. Search efforts will resume 10/09/12 weather permitting, with additional resources and a donated sonar unit. Area lodges are helping with the search by contributing people, boats, and equipment to include air transportation provided by Tikchik Adventures. At approximately 1800 on 10/9/2012 searchers located the missing aircraft, 1944 G-44 Grumman Widgeon, in about 40 feet of water and at the bottom of Tikchik Lake. Albert Newton "Newt" Ball, 71, of Dillingham is believed to have been the pilot and sole occupant of the plane when it crashed. Efforts to locate the pilot will resume today. Searchers include an Alaska Wildlife Trooper, an Alaska State Trooper, State Parks personnel, and local volunteers. He stated Gary Root, age 43, of Wasilla, two juveniles, and he had been hunting on the west sid e of the Delta River near the Donnelly Creek State camp ground and while tr ying to cross back across the severely braided river, had gotten his truck stuck in the river. Oloughlin and his party were un-injured and proper ly equipped to camp where they were at for the night. On 10/15/2012 at a pproximately 0730 hours, AST HELO 1 launched from Anchorage, recovered the stranded hunters and flew them back to Wasilla. Investigation found that DHS was investigating the theft of a wallet when they located a stolen Juneau laptop in the locker of a 15 year old student. Subsequent investigation determined the computer was stolen from the Juneau School d istrict after the student and parent claimed it had been checked out. Investigation continues. Investigation found James Hanlan arrived at the apartment intoxicated looking for his girlfriend. Hanlan was agitated and belligerent and when asked to leave an altercation occurred between Hanlan and the apartment owner. Hanlan left and was unable to be located. The apartment owner reported having pain to the side of her face, her wrist and knuckles, as well as her knee. Hanlan is being charged with one count of Assault IV. No medical treatment was needed and Hanlan's girlfriend denied being assaulted. Investigation continues. Investigation revealed Elaina Keaton-Crenshaw (43 YOA of Fairbanks) was driving a Chevy Tahoe northbound when she lost control of the vehicle on a snowy curve. The vehicle went into the ditch and rolled over. The vehicle sustained major damage. All occupants were wearing seatbelts and weren't injured. Keaton-Crenshaw was subsequently arrested for a warrant for her arrest for Theft III in the amount of $500.00 plus a court approved third party custodian. Investigation revealed Marina Basargin, 18 of Anchorage, lost control of the 2004 Chevrolet Aveo she was operating and hit a telephone pole. Further investigation revealed the three passenger's, all under the age of 21 had consumed alcoholic beverages. Ivan Basargin, 19 of Anchorage was issued a misdemeanor citation for MCA and the other passengers, Ulita Kalugin, 18 of Anchorage and a 16-year-old female received citations for MCA. All parties were not injured and were wearing safety belts; all were released from the scene to a responsible adult. The crash investigation revealed Brent L. Vanpelt (age 32 of Anchorage, AK) was operating an early 2000's model 35 foot refrigerated cargo truck traveling southbound when he lost traction on the ice covered pavement. Vanpelt was unable to maintain control of the vehicle. The vehicle went off the northbound side of the highway with the rear of the vehicle striking a dirt embankment. The vehicle sustained more than $500 of damage to the rear cargo lift bumper. Vanpelt was using a seat belt and there were no injuries. A parcel was interdicted that was destined for Barrow, AK. Investigation revealed the parcel was addressed to a 24 year old Barrow resident. The addressee was contacted and consent to open the parcel was obtained. The parcel was opened and located inside the parcel was 3.7 gross grams of methamphetamine. The investigation is continuing by investigators from the WAANT Unit. Investigation revealed the parcel was addressed to a 22 year old Barrow resident and sent from a 25 year old Anchorage resident. With the help of the Alaska State Troopers Canine Unit, through K-9 Duncan, investigators obtained a Search Warrant to search the parcel. Subsequently, the parcel was searched and located inside the parcel was approximately 3 ounces of marijuana. The investigation is continuing by investigators from the Anchorage WAANT Unit and it is expected that charges will be forwarded to the local District Attorney's Office. His death occurred at the family residence at that location about 25 miles west of Willow. Immediate family members, comprised of his wife and two young children, were all at the remote property when the incident occurred. At this point, ABI believes everyone connected with this investigation has been identified and contacted. However, the investigative efforts to gain a more clear understanding of the circumstances that resulted in the fatal shooting are ongoing. Original Text: On 10/15/12, at approximately 1943 hours, the Alaska State Troopers in Palmer were notified of a gunshot victim requiring medical attention at a remote cabin about 25 air miles west of Willow. A medevac flight was conducted by the Rescue Coordination Center, who transported the injured man to an Anchorage area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Troopers from Palmer arrived at the scene and initiated an investigation to determine the circumstances of the event. They remained at the location overnight. In the early morning hours of 10/16/12, a break in weather permitted members of the Alaska Bureau of Investigation to travel via a helicopter to the area to continue gathering information. The male decedent was scheduled for an autopsy 10/16/12. The preliminary results of that examination revealed the man suffered a single fatal gunshot wound. ABI continues to gather information to gain a more clear understanding of the circumstances related to this death. The identity of the decedent is not being released pending confirmation of some investigative details. At this time there is sufficient information to conclude that there is not a danger to the public as a result of this incident. The investigation is ongoing, and additional details will be made available as circumstances allow.
