AK Div of Fire and Life Safety ------------------------------------------------- Location: Palmer Type: Fire Fatality Text: 60 Year Old Valley Resident Succumbs to Burn Injuries (Palmer) A 60-year-old Mat-Su Valley resident has become Alaska's nineteenth fire fatality in 2012. The fire fatality was reported by Harborview Medical Center in Seattle on Tuesday, October 23rd. The victim was sent to Harborview after being severely burned by a trash fire at home on October 3rd. The victim was transported to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center by a family member and 911 was not activated. Because of the extent and seriousness of the burns he was transferred to Harborview Medical Center. Because 911 was not activated, there was no response by the fire department or local EMS. Details on the exact cause and events that led to this unfortunate accident are still under investigation by the Alaska State Troopers and the Central Mat-Su Fire Department. The Alaska Division of Fire and Life Safety remind Alaskans of some simple safety tips before burning trash: * Check local regulations before burning trash. * Check all burn barrels and trash piles for dangerous items before igniting the fire. * It is against the law to burn plastics and other petroleum based products that emit toxic smoke. * Do not use flammable liquids to start a trash fire and do not put aerosol cans in the fire. * Have water or a fire extinguisher on hand before igniting the fire. Alaska State Fire Marshal Kelly Nicolello emphasizes how important it is to call 911 for all fire or explosion emergencies. The sooner emergency services are notified of an emergency there is a greater chance of a favorable outcome. Nicolello adds, "Fire safe behavior can keep a fire from starting. Working smoke alarms, planning and practicing your fire escape plan and adding residential fire suppression sprinklers can ensure your family's safety from a fire."
