Troopers and volunteers from the Northwest Arctic Borough Search and Rescue, as well as the Kotzebue Police Dept., flew a final sortie in the steep mountainous region between the Ambler River and Shungnak River valleys. This flight completed a 13-day aerial and ground search effort by local volunteers, the Northwest Arctic Borough Search and Rescue, and Troopers in a search area of approximately 3,500 square miles. Troopers have suspended active search efforts until such time as new information becomes available. Original Text: On 11-11-12 at approximately 1430 hours, Troopers in Kotzebue received a report of an overdue hiker in a mountainous area approximately 45 miles North on the Ambler River from the Village of Ambler. Thomas Seibold, age 31, of Three Lakes Wisconsin, traveled to the region with friends in September to hike and explore. In late September, Seibold parted with his traveling companions and remained in the region to spend time with nature. Seibold planned to remain at a remote cabin area through October when he planned to hike out more than 25 miles. Seibold did not arrive in Kobuk as planned and missed a return flight home. Seibold is an outdoors and survival instructor. He has extensive experience in wilderness survival and in the past has winter camped in northern region for extended periods. Troopers are utilizing aircraft to search Seibold's likely route and have ground searched near remote cabins in the region without success. Troopers are focusing their search in an area near the confluence of the Ambler River and Ulaneak Creek were it is believed Thomas may have built a base camp. Weather conditions have restricted flight efforts and ground search is not an option due to open rivers, thin ice and a lack of snow. AST is continuing search efforts with the Northwest Arctic Borough Search and Rescue's assistance and Ambler residence.
