Author: NPZ0 Received Thursday, December 18, 2008 11:18 AM and posted Thursday, December 18, 2008 11:08 AM High Occurrence of Suicides in Rural Alaska Concerns Troopers ------------------------------- The Division of Alaska State Troopers is concerned with high number of suicides occurring in rural Alaska. Since December 1, 2008 there have been five suicides in ?C? Detachment alone. Four of the suicides were performed by teenagers and the forth by a 27 year old. All five of the suicides occurred in the Nome/Kotzebue area. According to a 2004 study conducted by the state of Alaska, the suicide rate for Alaska was 23.4 occurrences per 100,000 people. That is more than double the U.S. rate of 11 per 100,000 people. The Division of Alaska State Troopers is concerned that this trend may continue. By informing the public of this concern, AST hopes people will reach out to others in need before a suicide or a suicide attempt takes place. Suicides are 100% preventable.
