A Detachment Location: Ketchikan Incident number: AK12258139 Type: Search and Rescue Text: On 12/22/12, at 1553 hours, the Ketchikan office of Alaska State Troo pers and the Ketchikan Fire Department received a report that Corina Coggin s, age 32 of Ketchikan had fallen off an inflatable raft into the water at Connell Lake. It was further reported that Coggins was able to return to shore with help of two other rafters who had not entered the water. The three were then able to build a fire and reported their location was appro ximately .5 mile down a hiking trail. Initial responding members of Ketc hikan Volunteer Rescue Squad hiked around the lake to the victim's location . KVRS also launched a skiff and responded across the lake where they we re able to load the victims into the boat and return to the parking lot are a where North Tongass EMS was waiting. At 2145 hours, Alaska State Troop ers confirmed that all three subjects had been located and transported to K etchikan Medical Center for mild hypothermia. All searchers returned saf ely from the trail. Tongass Highway in Saxman for a reported two vehicle collision with unk nown injuries. Investigation showed that Penny L. Pedersen of Ketchikan was operating a 2009 Subaru station wagon and had stopped at the stop sign at Totem Row. Pedersen said she was attempting to turn left onto South T ongass Highway but her view of the highway was restricted due to a northbou nd KGB bus which had stopped to load/ unload passengers near the intersecti on. Pedersen told AST she pulled out onto the highway when she thought i t was safe but inadvertently pulled out in front of an oncoming Ford F-150 truck driven by Jim Castle also of Ketchikan. Both drivers reported wear ing seatbelts and both refused medical treatment. Pedersen was issued a citation for Failure to yield when turning left. Terry Wilson, age 53 of Palmer, was found deceased inside his residence. EMS was contacted and responded to the scene. Investigation revealed the death was the result of natural causes and no foul play is suspected. Next of kin was notified and the body was released to Valley Funeral Home.
