C Detachment Location: Dillingham Case Number: AK13018365 Type: Search and Rescue Text: On 3/17/13 at 20:45 hours, the Alaska State Troopers received a cell phone call from a 14-year-old girl. During a short, broken and emotional phone call, the girl was determined to be lost while operating a snowmachine between Dillingham and Manokotak and her clothing was wet. A hasty aerial search during difficult weather conditions revealed the victim's location to be 8.5 miles southwest of Kanakanak Hospital. A two-man recovery team was sent out, but once the team arrived at the last known location at 00:35 hours, the girl had driven away on her snow machine that was thought to be out of fuel. By this time, her cell phone was either lost or ran out of power. Due to blowing snow, the snowmachine's tracks could not be followed and the weather would not permit another aerial search. At 03:00 hours, four additional search and rescue team volunteers joined the mission. At 03:58 hours, the victim was rescued by the search and rescue team 4.5 miles southwest of Kanakanak Hospital while she was on foot. She was in stable condition and taken to the hospital and released the next day. During the investigation, it was determined the victim had driven the snowmachine into thick alders where it became stuck. The victim then walked 4.5 miles before she was rescued.
