A Detachment Location: Neets Bay, AK Case number: 10-63721 Type: Unattended Death Text: On 7/13/2010 at 1550 hours, Alaska State Troopers and North Tongass Volunteer Fire Department received a report of an unresponsive male in Neets Bay who had been found face-down in shallow water. Guardian Fight responded to the scene and confirmed dead-on-arrival. The male was identified as Steven J. Seley Jr., age 37 of Ketchikan. Next-of-kin have been notification. No signs of foul play. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Jennifer Gadola age 25 of Palmer. Investigation revealed Gadola was operating the vehicle with a suspended driver's license. Gadola was issued a criminal citation to appear in court at a later date and released at the scene. The driver was identified as William L. Murray, age 30 of Wasilla. Investigation revealed that Murray had 2 outstanding warrants for his arrest. The first warrant for FTA on the original charge of Criminal Mischief IV, the second warrant for FTC with ASAP on the original charge of DUI. Murray was arrested on both warrants, transported and remanded to the Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility. Bail for both warrants totaled $2,500. At approximately 0440 hours, a Palmer based Alaska State Trooper saw the stolen vehicle traveling south bound on the Glenn Highway near mile marker 33. The Alaska State Troopers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, at which time the truck failed to yield and continued traveling south bound on the Glenn Highway at a high rate of speed. The vehicle eventually stopped at approximately mile 28.2 of the Glenn Highway. The driver and sole occupant of the truck was a 17 yoa juvenile, of Anchorage. The juvenile was arrested at the scene for Vehicle Theft I and Fail to Stop at the Direction of a Peace Officer I. The juvenile was transported and remanded to the Matsu Youth Facility. The driver was identified as Christopher Panamarioff, age 18 of Kodiak. Investigation revealed that Panamarioff was driving without a licensed driver in the vehicle as required by his Alaska driver's instructional permit. Panamarioff was issued a summons for driving in violation of his instructional permit and issued a traffic citation for failure to wear his seatbelt. Gregory was observed to be intoxicated and under the influence of alcohol, which was in violation of her probation conditions. Gregory had active probation conditions relating to a prior Driving Under the Influence conviction, which stipulate she is not to possess or consume alcoholic beverages. An arrest warrant has been requested for Gregory on a charge of Probation Violation. Peterson of Aniak assaulted an adult female resident of Aniak at a Salmonberry Avenue residence. Subsequent investigation revealed Peterson grabbed the female while under the influence of alcohol, which caused her physical injury. Peterson had previously been convicted of Assault 4-DV twice within the previous two years and as a result was arrested and charged with Assault 3-DV. Additionally Peterson was on misdemeanor probation for a prior unrelated assault, which stipulates he is not to possess or consume alcohol. A charge of probation violation has been forwarded to the Bethel District Attorney's Office for prosecution. State Troopers responded and subsequent investigation revealed Michael E. Akaran, age 53, of Kotlik was attempting to swim across the Kotlik Slough when he began to struggle. A witness was not able to assist Akaran as he became submerged. Akaran's body was located at 2205 hours and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. It was reported that Paul Nukusuk, age 70 of Hooper Bay, along with 5-6 others, some of which were children, had left Hooper Bay to go camping and collect firewood on 7/8/10 and were due to return on 7/9/10. On 7/10/10 at approx. 1812 hours, two volunteer boat search crews were sent out from Hooper Bay to search for the boaters. At approx. 2334 hours on 7/10/10, the Hooper Bay Police department notified AST that the searchers had located the boaters on a river south of Hooper Bay. The boat had broken down due to a faulty battery and the boaters were stranded on shore. The boaters were returned safely to Hooper Bay. Further investigation into the incident revealed that the intoxicated individual, later identified as Dennis Pete (age 19 of Akiak), assaulted and a number of people in the village with the firearm. Alaska State Troopers responded to the Village of Akiak and later arrested and remanded Pete on 5 counts of Assault in the 3rd degree x 5, Misconduct involving a weapon 4th degree, and importation of Alcohol into a Dry Community. Alcohol was a contributing factor in this incident. An Army Medical Unit was rendering assistance to the occupants of the vehicle when AST arrived on scene. Investigation revealed that Abbie J. COTTLE, 30 of Delta Jct., was driving her 1996 Nissan Pathfinder north on the Richardson Highway near MP 264. A cow moose began to cross the highway in front of the Pathfinder, reversed direction as though to return to the wood-line, then reversed direction again, striking the passenger front of the Pathfinder. COTTLE received slight injury from broken glass. She was treated and released at the scene. There were no other reported injuries to any of the other occupants. The moose had departed the area, but was reported to be severely injured. AST located and dispatched the injured animal. The moose was salvaged by a registered salvage responder. Proper safety restraints were utilized by the occupants. No enforcement action was taken. Delta EMS and Ft. Greely Fire units responded. During the stop it was learned that the driver, Shane L. DELONG, 23 of Delta Jct., was knowingly driving the KIA without a valid liability insurance policy. The vehicle traveled approximately 200 feet down the embankment before coming to rest in the creek. Due to the steep terrain and current conditions along the Taylor Highway, only aerial assets are able to access the area. The Rescue Coordination Center requested that the Alaska Air National Guard respond. The Alaska Air National Guard responded. No one has been located and no signs of vehicle occupant(s) were found. Troopers believe the driver of the vehicle is Charles F. Collins, age 56 of Eagle River, Alaska. He is unaccounted for and considered missing. At this time an aerial search is underway by the Alaska State Troopers and the U.S. Parks Service. Ground and water searchers are on hold until searchers can safely navigate the area. Troopers contacted Cody L. Parry of Trapper Creek after he drove his vehicle a 1998 Blue Dodge Dakota over an embankment onto the Talkeetna Riverbed. Investigation revealed that Parry was driving under the influence and in possession of a firearm. Parry was remanded to Mat-Su Pretrial on the charges of DUI and Misconduct Involving Weapons in the 4th Degree, bail was set at $1500 cash/corporate.
