A Detachment Location: Ketchikan Case Number: 10-67526 Type: Fatal plane crash Text: At 0727 on 7/23/2010, Alaska State Troopers received a report of a float plane crash in the Ward Cove area. AST, North Tongass Volunteer Fire Department, U.S. Coast Guard and officers from the Ketchikan Police Department responded and located the plane. The pilot and sole occupant, Josh Murdock, 38, of Ketchikan, was found deceased. Murdock was flying the 1959 DeHavilland Beaver owned by Pacific Airways of Ketchikan. Initial investigation reveals the plane clipped some trees, causing the plane to lose its right wing before crashing in a small grassy knoll. The FAA, NTSB and SME have been notified of the death. The NTSB will take over the investigation to determine the cause of the crash. AST contacted the driver, Russell Shaw, age 51, of Whittier. Investigation revealed that Shaw was driving while impaired by alcoholic beverages and that he had controlled substance on his person. Investigation revealed?Lenora Tamu Porterfield, age 33, of Wasilla, assaulted her boyfriend and then broke the windows to the residence. Damage to the residence was estimated at $4,000.00. Porterfield was arrested and charged with Criminal Mischief 3rd degree, DV Assault 4th degree, Disorderly Conduct, and providing false information. Further investigation revealed Porterfield had an outstanding warrant for failure to comply conditions of probation on the original charge of misconduct involving a controlled substance 4th degree. Porterfield was remanded into Mat-Su Pretrial where she was held without bail. The driver of a 1997 Dodge 1500 identified as Marsalyn M. Shaffer, age 41, of Big Lake was traveling south on Big Lake road when her vehicle crossed the center line striking the front drivers side of a 2005 Volkswagen Golf being driven by Lance A. Paul, age 40, of Big Lake. Both drivers reported wearing their seatbelts and the damage to both vehicles is estimated at $2,000. Investigation revealed that?M. Shaffer was driving while impaired and under the influence of alcohol. M. Shaffer was issued four citations, arrested at the scene, then transported and remanded to the Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility.? Investigation revealed that Kathy Gibson, age 53 of Wasilla, had died unexpectedly at her residence. Next of kin has been notified. The state medical examiner's office was contacted and transported the body to the state medical examiner's office. Foul play is not suspected in Gibson's death. Author: TRS1 Received Friday, July 23, 2010 7:23 PM and posted Friday, July 23, 2010 7:12 PM Location: Palmer Case Number: 10-67498 Type: Missing aircraft Text: On 7-23-10 at approximately 0018 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a report of a missing aircraft believed to have departed the Palmer Airport at about 1930 hours on 7-22-2010. The aircraft is described as a Cessna 170-B on wheels, white with maroon and gray striping, tail #N4590C. It is believed the pilot is David Akers, 51, of Palmer and the passenger is Gary D. Nall, 46, of Wasilla. Family members expected both men to be back by dark on 7-22-2010. The aircraft is believed to have an Emergency Location Transmitter (ELT) on board, but the Rescue Coordination Center (RCC) has not reported any corresponding ELT activations. However, during the search efforts, a faint ELT was detected in the Anderson Lake area near an airstrip. Helo-1 landed located the aircraft in a hanger and learned from the pilot that he had experienced a hard landing a couple of days ago and didn't realize his ELT had been activated. AST has confirmed with Kenai Flight Service that no flight plan was filed by the Akers. Several local airstrips have been checked. Alaska State Troopers Helo-1 and an observer flew for approximately eight hours on 7/23/2010 in search of the missing aircraft, but has been unable to locate it as of 1900 hours. Helo-1 has searched the Anderson Lake, Finger Lake, Mud Lake, Wolf Lake, Nancy Lake, Cottonwood Lake, Meadow Lake as well as the Knik River Valley and the Matanuska River Valley to approximately mile 90 of the Glenn Highway. Helo-1 also searched the Skwetna River region without locating the plane, Akers or Nall. Troopers have met with the family and discussed efforts to continue the search 7/24/2010. The firearm was taken away prior to AST arrival. Paniptchuk as taken into custody and lodged at the Unalakleet Jail. On 7/23 he will be arraigned on a charge of Misconduct Involving a Weapon in the Fourth Degree. Investigation revealed that Robert Juhlin, 22 of Kodiak, was riding his 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle southbound on the Chiniak Highway when a deer crossed in front of him and he struck it with his leg. Juhlin was able to ride his motorcycle to an area where he could report the incident and summon medical assistance. He was wearing a helmet at the time and suffered an injury to his leg. His motorcycle was not damaged. Mansfield stated while staking out property from his vehicle noticed two white males trying to enter his warehouse. The two males fled the scene. Investigation revealed that Dennis Stinson, age 39 of Fairbanks, took a check not belonging to him, changed the name of the check, and cashed the check at a local bank. Investigation revealed Stinson was on probation violation for Theft II. A search warrant was executed at his residence, which revealed other drugs. Stinson was arrested and remanded to FCC. Investigation revealed that Kuzmin was fishing in an area closed to commercial salmon fishing. Kuzmin was summoned to appear in Cordova court on 08-04-10. Later that evening, Mountain located the rented motor home at the same location. After sitting by the motor home for approximately 1 hour, two individuals came back to the vehicle with another limit of salmon. Trooper Mountain cited Jacky Bluzel, 70 yoa, and Rolf Jenny, 65 yoa, both from Zurich, Switzerland, for taking an over limit of sockeye salmon from the Kenai River. Investigation showed that Zook shot a moose in February but had lost his permit. Zook was hunting with Wharton at the time and Wharton had a permit. Wharton tagged the moose and submitted the required report to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Zook filed a report with ADFG that indicated he had not harvested a moose. Both men were issued a summons to appear in court in August. Laura Belle Schramm, age 43 of Fairbanks, was identified as the driver. Investigation revealed Schramm was driving while impaired by a combination of alcohol and a controlled substance. Further, she was in possession of marijuana with intent to deliver it to others. Schramm was arrested for DUI and Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance 5th. She was remanded at Fairbanks Correctional Center and held with no bail pending arraignment.
