A Detachment Location: Sitka Case number: 10-69719 Type: Welfare check/SAR Text: Update: On 7-28-10, at 1715 hours, SMR boat team found MacFerrin north of Sitka in Nakwasina Bay alive and well. All teams are being recalled. The NOK has been notified. On 7/28/10, at 1044 hours, Sitka Mountain Rescue contacted AST. They were receiving concerned calls from family and friends of hiker, Michael John MacFerrin, age 31, from Bolder, CO, who was making a 4 week trek of Baranof Island from the north end to the south end. He started the hike on 7-24-10 and was using a Spot, locater so that family and friends could follow his trek. On 7-25-10, at 1755 hours, the Spot locater stopped transmitting. He was carrying extra batteries for the Spot. On 7-25-10, the USCG did a fly over the last know position and could not see any sign of MacFerrin. On 7-28-10, at 1148 hours, it was decided to do welfare check and send a three man SMR team to the last known position. The USCG was contacted and assisted transporting the search team to the area. They are equipped and plan on spending the night. SMR is also sending a boat north of Sitka to see if by chance MacFerrin is walking back on the beach. Investigation revealed a 17 year old male assaulted a family member inside the residence. Further the 17 year old male physically resisted arrest. The 17 year old male was arrested, transported, and remanded into Mat-Su Youth Facility where he was held without bail. The driver had been identified by Name as Lance Devin Larue, age 29 of Wasilla who has two arrest warrants. Larue failed to yield and after a brief vehicle pursuit, Larue was taken into custody. Records confirmed Lance Devin Larue of Wasilla has two arrest warrants; one for FTA PT CONF HRING original charge of DWLS and FTA PT CONF HRING original charge of DWLS and Criminal Trespass 1st. The driver of was identified as Megan Carlton, 19 yoa of Glennallen. Investigation determined that Carlton was traveling northbound on the Richardson Hwy when a moose stepped out into the highway. Carlton attempted to avoid the moose but was unsuccessful. Carlton's vehicle sustained significant damage. Carlton reported to be wearing her seatbelt and was uninjured during the collision. The moose was released to charity. Investigation revealed Christopher Royal Cook, age 17 of Wasilla was operating a 2006 blue Chevrolet Cobalt passenger car North bound on Vine Rd. approaching the intersection of Hollywood Rd. Michael Dwane Andrews, age 53 of Wasilla was operating a 1986 red Ford Thunderbird North bound traveling in front of Cook's vehicle. Andrews slowed down due to a vehicle in front of him turning left onto Hollywood Rd. and Cook's vehicle rear ended Andrews vehicle causing damage only. No injuries were reported, all occupants were utilizing their seat belts, Cook's vehicle sustained $2,000.00 in damages and Andrews vehicle was totaled. Investigation revealed Mark A. Shugak, age 45, of Wasilla, died at his residence following a significant fall. The AK State Medical Examiner's office responded to the scene and is assisting in the ongoing investigation. At this time no foul play is suspected and next of kin have been notified. The driver was identified as William Lester Murray, age 30 of Wasilla. Investigation revealed that Murray had a revoked AKDL and was violating conditions of release from an unrelated Criminal Mischief charge. Murray was arrested and was also found to be in possession of a small amount of methamphetamine. Murray was remanded into MSPT, where bail was set at $3,000 cash. The vehicle was impounded. Investigation revealed that Sharlene Olson, age 24 of Dillingham, hit her cousin in the face with a small object, threatened another cousin, and violated her conditions of release by consuming alcoholic beverages. During the investigation, it was reported that Eric Hainsel, age 44 of Egegik was riding around on his four-wheeler intoxicated. Troopers went and contacted Hainsel at his residence. Investigation revealed that Hainsel was impaired by alcohol and that he had been driving his four-wheeler. During the arrest, Hainsel fought with the Trooper and resisted arrest. Hainsel was transported to the King Salmon jail and charged with DUI and resisting arrest. His bail was set at $1500. State Troopers knew from prior contact with Brinkmeyer that her Alaska driver's license status was revoked due to a prior DUI conviction. Investigation revealed that Michelle Johnson, age 26 of Egegik had thrown several large rocks at a male that was driving a forklift intoxicated and had hit her vehicle. Johnson broke the windows out of the forklift and hit the male in the head with the rocks. Johnson was arrested for assault in the third degree and was transported to the King Salmon Jail. Investigation revealed that DREW started the vehicle 249 times and drove the vehicle without the interlock device in operation. AST located the vehicle and identified the driver as Katherine Harrell, age 52, of Fairbanks. The investigation revealed that Harrell was operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Further investigation revealed Harrell possessed prescription medication in her purse that was not prescribed to her. Harrell was remanded into FCC on the charges of DUI and MICS 4. Text: On 7-27-10 AWT Troopers contacted James Young, age 45 of Juneau, for failing to have a proper bio-degradable escape mechanism on a shrimp pot that was checked in Hoonah Sound on 7-26-10 by AWT Troopers. Young was fined $110.00 and given an optional court appearance in Sitka District Court within 30 days of receiving the citation. Roger's clients were actively fishing on a guided trip when contacted by AWT Troopers. Swab, 26 yoa of Merritt, Michigan for 2 counts of Commercial Fishing in closed waters that occurred in Egegik on 7/21 and 7/22/10 respectively. Arraignment on both charges is set for August 20th in Naknek court. Allan had been contacted on 5-28-10 with a deer he had killed on Fish Creek Road earlier in the day. Allan was sentenced to 30 days in jail, with no time suspended, and required to pay restitution for the deer in the amount of $400. The rifle and other items used by Allan in the taking of the deer were forfeited to the State of Alaska. AK Bureau of Highway Patrol ------------------------------------------------- Location: Trapper Creek Case number: 10-69407 Type: MVA-Injury Text: On 07/27/2010 at about 1611 hours, Talkeetna AST and the AST Bureau of Highway Patrol, south-central team responded to a two vehicle collision with possible serious injuries at approximately Mile 128 of the Parks Hwy. Investigation revealed Desiree L. Hughett ( 24 YOA of Wasilla) was driving her white 2005 Dodge Stratus southbound on the Parks Hwy with her 17 month old infant when she struck a northbound red 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee being operated by Kathleen L. Wysong (46 YOA of Anchorage). Wysong was airlifted to Providence Hospital in Anchorage and was later released with minor injuries. Hughett and her infant were transported to Mat-Su Regional Hospital and later released. The investigation is on going.
