Investigation revealed that Matthew Diverty, age 23 of Ketchikan, damaged property inside a family member's residence and interfered with a family member who was attempting to call AST. M. C Detachment ------------------------------------------------- Location: Chuathbaluk Case number: AK12245204 Type: Arson II, Assault III x 2, Misconduct Involving Weapons IV, and Making a False Report Text: On 10-25-12, at about 0836 hours, 26 YOA Arnold Simeon Jr. of Chuathbaluk reported he had just been assaulted by a 19 YOA male resident of Chuathbaluk at Simeon's father's residence on Main Road. Simeon initially reported that the 19 YOA male became enraged and physically attacked him in addition to pointing a .22 caliber rifle at his head and "strangling" him. In addition, the male reportedly stated he was going to kill Simeon and burn the house down. At about 0853 hours, State Troopers who were preparing to respond to Chuathbaluk were notified that the residence was on fire and fully engulfed in flames. Aniak based State Troopers, a Village Public Safety Officer and a Deputy State Fire Marshal responded and investigated. The four bedroom residence was a total loss as a result of the fire. Chuathbaluk does not have an organized fire department or firefighting equipment. During the course of the investigation Simeon Jr. admitted to scaring the 19 YOA male by shooting a rifle in the air multiple times in addition to physically fighting with him. After the fight Simeon admitted to starting a fire in the living room, which resulted in the house burning down. Simeon was arrested on charges of Arson II, Assault III x 2, Misconduct Involving Weapons IV, and Making a False Report. Simeon was transported to Bethel where he was remanded to YKCC without bail pending arraignment. AST and AWT responded in the Patrol vessel P/V CAMA'I. A passing vessel the M/V Glacier Wind also responded to a flare from the Bethany-B. The US Coast Guard launched a MH-60 in response to the flare. The Glacier Wind assisted the Bethany-B until the CAMA'I arrived on scene and was able to tow the Bethany-B to a safe anchorage near Sunny Cove on Spruce Island. AST/ AWT transported two occupants of the Bethany-B back to Kodiak while the third made arrangements for the repair and recovery of the Bethany-B. Upon contact the driver was identified as Arvind Chittambakkam, a 29 year old male from Fairbanks. The investigation revealed Arvind was too impaired to be operating a motor vehicle. Arvind was arrested for DUI and remanded at the Fairbanks Correctional Center. Ohayon was issued two citations to the Anchorage Court with a bail of $310 each. Investigation showed that Sakurada had arrived in Alaska on 7/12/12 and shortly thereafter purchased a resident sport fishing license and obtained a 2012 Upper Cook Inlet Dip Net Fishery Permit. Sakurada claimed 1 year 2 months residency on his license after only having remained in Alaska for 10 days. In addition to the fishing license, he purchased a resident 2012 hunting/trapping license. Sakurada was issued two $310 citations for the sport fishing and hunting/trapping licenses and a summons to the Kenai Court for taking 48 personal use salmon without holding a valid 2012 resident sport fish license. Incident to the contact, six (6) 750ml bottles of alcohol were found on his person and in his backpack. Quinhagak is a local option community which bans the sale, importation, and possession of alcohol. A case report charging him with alcohol importation will be forwarded to the Bethel District Attorney's Office for review.
