Investigation revealed that Eddie B. Gallahorn Sr. (age 85 from Kotzebue) had passed away of natural causes and was pronounced at 1430 hours. Gallahorn's next of kin was on scene at the time of death and his body was released to family members. Investigation determined that Richard R. Patterson, age 32 of Noorvik engaged in conduct that created a substantial risk of injury to another when he fought with his girlfriend as she was holding their 2 yoa child. Troopers responded to Noorvik and arrested Patterson. He was transported to the Kotzebue Regional Jail facility where he was held without bail. Frank Carruthers, 60 yoa of Nome contacted Nome Police Department via cell phone stating that he was stranded on the ice approximately one mile from shore near the west beach. Carruthers reported that he was checking his crab pots via snowmachine when the ice pack broke free due to high winds creating a 50 foot open water gap between him and the shore. State Troopers, along with Nome Police Department visually located Carruthers approximately one mile from shore. Nome State Troopers maintained communication via cell phone with Carruthers while an air asset was deployed. A Bering Air R-44 helicopter was chartered and successfully landed on the ice to rescue Carruthers without incident. Carruthers was flown back to Bering Air where he was checked by Nome Emergency Medical Services. Carruthers did not require medical treatment. Author: LAK0 Received Monday, December 31, 2012 6:31 AM and posted Monday, December 31, 2012 6:14 AM Location: Mile 88 Steese Highway Case Number: AK12259225 Type: Take Caribou During a Closed Season Text: On December 26th, 2012 the Alaska Wildlife Troopers conducted an airborne patrol of the Steese Highway and White mountains North of Fairbanks. At 1150 hours Troopers observed three men on the ground near the highway with a freshly killed caribou. Since the area was closed to hunting, Troopers landed and contacted the hunters. Investigation revealed that Michael Poland, 20 yoa of Fairbanks had killed a caribou adjacent to the Steese Highway. Jacob Barrette, 20 yoa of Fairbanks had fired his rifle at caribou, but missed. He also aided in processing and transporting the dead caribou. Troopers seized the two rifles used and the caribou. Poland is charged with taking a caribou during a closed season, unlawful possession of game and failing to validate a permit. Barrette is charged with hunting in a closed area and unlawful possession of game. Devore took a caribou near the Steese Highway near Eagle summit under the impression that, as a resident of Central, she was allowed to hunt there under federal subsistence regulations. Investigation by Troopers showed that Devore took the caribou on state land, where the season was not open. Troopers seized caribou. Devore is charged with taking a caribou during a closed season.
